This is a cute Pac-Man clone. I like how crisp the art looks, though I don't like how the character sprites for Harold/Reid barely move. Some other criticisms:

  • The in-game menu consists only of "return to title" and "cancel." What if I wanted to adjust the music volume or change the "always dash" setting?
  • I also advise including a keyboard config plugin (Yanfly has one). Players like it when you allow them to adjust the controls to their liking.
  • Challenge is lacking; the slimes just sit in the spawn area getting in each others' way so you can just run by and kill them at the end of the maze.

Let's follow that up with some positive points:

  • The music is cute and fits the game
  • There's a web version
  • Different board layouts keep things interesting
  • Being able to play as different characters opens up possible mechanical differences for potential replay value

This is a good prototype that can be further improved into a fun experience that stretches the engine's limits.

Thank you so much for the detailed review, KV!

We're glad you enjoyed the game & that porting small games like 'Harold VS Reid' to web browsers was a good idea! ^u^

We'll be using this list, your suggestions & everyone's feedback as a guide on what needs to be fixed, implemented & improved on with the full version of Harold VS Reid sometime in the future so stay tuned! ;)

Adorable little game. I really love the retro aesthetics and how you tied RPG elements into it by being able to fight slimes. My only gripe about this game is the disparity between the sprite resolution; some sprites are 1:1, some sprites are 2:1, and the enormous stairs look like 4:1 to me. Other than that, amazing little game. It's a real shame this isn't eligible for voting in the Haroldverse jam.

Thank you so much for the kind words & feedback, DJ! Glad to hear you enjoyed the game! ^u^

Admittedly, before this project I've never worked in a sprite resolution bigger than 1:1 so I just stuck with that because of time constraints + this was just a prototype version.

However, in the full version of Harold VS Reid I'll make sure match Gifs style/pallete better and make everything 2:1 resolution.

Cute game with great, simple art. Only now after reading the game page do I understand the food = fight slime mechanic. Also I made a huge mistake and I won with Reid. NOooooooooo. Thanks for participating!!

Thanks for the feedback, Human! :)

Glad you enjoyed the art even tho you beat the game as Reid LOL

We had fun participating in Haroldjam this year! Thank you again for the opportunity! ^u^

cute.  not what i expected going in - i should have read the rest of the page first.  it would have been nice if the slimes could have wandered, but otherwise well designed.

Thanks for your feedback Zyphli! :)

Glad you enjoyed the game and we'll be improving on the enemy AI & movement in the full game.

Unfortunately we ran out of time during the jam but, we'll make sure to add an in-game tutorial + explanation of the gameplay to match what's on the store page!

That was charming! I liked the music and the other sound effects. The art was cute and I liked the feel of each level.
I may play again just to take in more of the level design!

Short but delicious! This game was like a satisfying snack.

Thanks Snim! I'm so happy to hear you enjoyed the game and found it both satisfying AND delicious haha

YES! Designing the levels was the best part! Gif's tilesets really flow well together and make each map/level stand out. My personal favorite is the Forest Level :)
